Champagne Bolieu

Champagne Bolieu

Champagne Bolieu is located in the village of Bassuet, 70km south-east of Reims, where the unique terroir is that of Côteaux Vitryats (largely forgotten after the Phylloxera crisis) in the Côte des Blancs region.

The family domaine is now helmed by Laurence and Charles Baffard, the 3rd generation of winegrowers who have been running this 6ha estate since 1988. The name BOLIEU is a tribute to all the three generations who worked the land: "B" refers to Laurence and Charles Baffard, while the "O" is a nod to Lydia and Serge Ortillon, the aunt and uncle who grew and expanded the vineyard holdings, and "Beaulieu" is the last name of their grandparents, who founded the domaine.

Most of the family's hilly vineyards are planted with Chardonnay, with a tiny amount of Pinot Meunier, on Turonian Matrices chalk (geological era 93-86 B.C.) mixed with limestone marl and clay, which gives Bolieu's wines the necessary structure, acidity, flavours and longevity to shine.

Charles and Laurence champion sustainable winegrowing in their work to produce elegant wines with finesse, and all of them go through extended aging on lees before release. No more than 25,0000 bottles a year can be made across five different cuvées - a tiny production really as far as winemaking goes!If you love Blanc de Blancs (100% Chardonnay) champagnes, these lovely bottles from Laurence and Charles are not to be missed as one can hardly find them in the marketplace, especially their flagship "Carnet de Léone" and the really rare vintage "L'Instant B" !
