Champagne Julien Prélat
Based in Celles-sur-Ource in the southern Champagne region of Côte des Bar, Julien Prélat, the fourth and current custodian of the Prélat's family vineyards, decided to chart his own path as an independent wine grower-producer (recoltant-manipulant in French) by crafting and bottling his own wines (instead of selling all the grapes to big Champagne houses like his forefathers) when he returned to the family's business in 2010.
Single varietal, single parcel and single vintage wines are the very essence of what Julien loves making. Each of his cuvée speaks of a particular terroir, specific vintage conditions and the unique expressions of the grape varieties planted, some of which are exceedingly rare in Champagne.
Julien and his partner, Karine, are committed to working the vineyards as sustainably and as natural as possible, with minimal intervention in the vinification process, practise small batch winemaking, and tinker with different types of vessels for their fermentation and aging process. Naturally, quantities are quite small across all their wines as the couple only makes no more than 25,000 bottles a year across multiple cuvées.
