Champagne Yann Alexandre
Yann and his partner Séverine grow some six hectares of vines spread across multiple plots in the tiny 180-inhabitant village of Courmas and its neighbouring farming towns of Petite Montagne de Reims, approximately 10km southwest of the ancient capital of Reims. Their dedication in holistic, regenerative practices and meticulous care in the vineyards saw the re-appearance of the once extinct, rare and delicate yellow flowers of tulipe de vignes in abundance across all their parcels - a testament to the restorative efforts sown by Yann and Séverine's very own hands, as they continue tirelessly to introduce more biodiversity into what they do.
Each variety (Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir & Chardonnay) is vinified separately according to their respective parcels, thereby preserving their individual characteristics or expression of terroir before any blending is made. The Alexandre's approach of "less is more" is evident in the little use of sulphur, extended lees aging (a rarity these days as most growers will want to sell as soon as they are allowed to by law!), and partial to no malolactic fermentation regime, yielding minimalist champagnes that retain their purity, racy acidity and freshness.
For us, Yann and Séverine craft some of the most precise, crystalline and breathtaking terroir-driven bubblies we have seen in an ocean of mediocre grower champagnes. They may not be the trendiest in terms of packaging but all of Yann and Séverine's wines have a quietly seductive, suave and alluring character that will continuously draw you in to take just one more sip after the last, as the wines evolve gently with air.
