Jacquère from the Alpine region of Savoie, France

Updated: May 3, 2021

Jacquère is a widely planted white grape variety that hails from the Savoie region of Eastern France, bordering Switzerland. This mountain (or Alpine) variety typically produces wines that are crisp, green and tart and once it has had some bottle aging, the wine will show a more prominent touch of tropical tones in the spectrum of green mango & guava skin.

One of the single varietal Jacquère that we love is made by the well-known Savoie winemaker, Jacques Maillet, who retired in 2016 after spending years in the viticulture and wine growing industry. Naturally, his wines have become more of a collector's item of late, especially amongst those who drink natural, minimal intervention and sulphur-free wines. This particular bottling came from his Autrement series, which means "the other or the alternative way" as Monsieur Maillet was determined to make wines which are completely systemic fungicide, herbicide and pesticide free given his history and struggles with high volume of chemical exposure in his much younger days working in the local wine co-op (that eventually led to his battle with cancer). So when he ventured out to start his own project, he was adamant that things should be done differently in the vineyards he owned, and perhaps in a far more natural way that what he was trained to do.

We cracked open a bottle of his 2013 version yesterday at a local zi char in Singapore (Yang Ming Seafood Bishan) and the wine was singing with plenty of bright citrus, stone fruits, bosch pears and braeburn apple flavours sprinkled with a touch of spice. The steamed lobster and cheong fun (steamed rice rolls) slathered with a generous amount of soy-garlic sauce was addictive with this wine, as would some steamed baby sotong (squid) HK style if Yang Ming Seafood didn't run out of it! Bottles are still available on our online store if you're keen to try some. From now till 29th April, there's a special May Day offer of $30 off your total bill too! Just apply the promo code MAYDAY30 when you are ready to check-out with your cart.
