We sampled one of the brand new Z Blanc (100% Viognier) over the weekend and unlike its vintage 2016 sibling, this 2019 version had seen an additional 72 hours of maceration with skin-contact, thereby imparting an attractive deep golden yellow colour with orange hues to the wine. Lots of apricots, peaches and pears on the nose with an aromatic orange blossom honey, caramel and toasty, citrus tone overlay. On the palate, it was more about sour plums, tart apricots, citrus, spiced fruits and cinnamon, all framed beautifully by a mouth-watering acidity. As the wine evolved with air, light notes of VA (volatile acidity) also emerged, in a good way thankfully, adding a layer of complexity and providing a lift to the wine's various fruit elements.
Do note that there's quite a fair bit of sediment in the bottle (which turns the wine cloudy) as no filtration or fining of any kind was carried out by the couple. So we highly recommend that one leaves the bottle in an upright position for a day or two before drinking, and pour the wine out gently. Those who have fancy decanters at home, please make good use of them.
